Some love stories have a clearly defined beginning, middle, and end. William has no illusions about that - he just never expected his own story to come to an end so soon. Cal’s cancer diagnosis affects all parts of their life. Together they bear the unbearable weight of knowing their time is running out.
Twenty years earlier, Cal is shyly trying to make his way through university without causing too much of a stir. Meeting high-spirited William is the last thing he expects, and the first day of the rest of his life. But believing he can be loved by someone isn’t easy, and it will take Cal a lifetime to learn.
Starting at the ending and working back towards the beginning, Cal and William’s story isn’t a love story. But it is a story about love.
While every effort has been made to handle the subjects in this book with care, be aware that this story contains a realistic if hazy description of a terminal illness, realistic relationship dynamics, discussion of main character death and dying, referenced child abuse both physical and emotional (not on screen) and discussion of economic realities. An unconventional story structure with a sad end at the beginning but a happy beginning at the end.
